In 2008, Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios released Fallout 3, an open-world RPG set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Having bought Bethesda from Interplay Entertainment, this is the first game they’ve created following the company’s acquisition. Previous installments used 2D isometric designs and turn-based battles, but this one switches to 3D graphics and real-time combat. This represents a major change for the company. It was made available for purchase on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms everywhere in the world in October 2008.

The name “Capital Wasteland” refers to the massive area to the north and west of Washington, D.C. that contains the city’s ruins and a large portion of its original landmass. By the year 2077 (dubbed “The Great War”), a global conflict between the United States and China over unique assets and the last supplies of undiscovered uranium and Crude oil had brought about the end of the world as we know it, thanks to the inventions of the nuclear age.
This is not a direct sequel to Fallout 2, as that game’s events took place 36 years earlier, in the year 1997. After their father disappears without a trace, players assume the role of a survivor in Vault 101, one of several underground shelters constructed during World War I to house 1,000 people safe from the atomic bomb. When the time comes, they face the Enclave, a group of disgruntled ex-government officials who are trying to exploit their father’s work for their own benefit, while trying to carry on their father’s work.
Critics have called Aftermath 3 one of the best video games of all time thanks to its innovative combination of free-form gameplay and customizable character progression. In comparison to the first month of availability for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (around 500,000 units), the NPD Group predicted that Fallout 3 would sell over 610,000 copies in its first month of availability as of October 2008.
The game received five new items thanks to post-launch support from Bethesda. Both in Australia and India, where conservatives took offense at the game’s “Brahmin” label for its genetically modified dairy cow, the game caused a stir upon its release.
