The spirits known as Malaca-like beings must go through the Land of the Dead before arriving at their final destination. While on vacation, travel agent Manuel “Manny” Calavera seeks to save moral novice Mercedes “Meche” Colomar. The noir style of the game, which incorporates parts of Aztec belief in life after death, is influenced by The Maltese Falcon, On the Waterfront, and Casablanca.
Grim Fandango received plaudits for its original plot and pacing. It has won several awards for being one of the most played computer games ever. However, LucasArts’ move to reverse the experience game trend and downgrade the genre was a commercial flop.
Schafer’s company Double Fine Productions acquired the Grim Fandango licence from Sony in the wake of Disney’s 2014 acquisition of LucasArts and subsequent closure of the company as a video game developer. Double Fine released a remastered version of the game in January 2015 that featured new character graphics, improved controls (such as point and snap counting), a more streamlined score, and editorial input from the game’s designers. Versions were available for Linux, OS X, Windows, and the PlayStation 4. Versions that work on iOS and Android were made available in May 2015. In November 2018, the remastered adaptation was also made available for the Nintendo Switch. Microsoft also launched an Xbox One version in October 2020.
