However, just because Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 were arcade-style doesn’t mean they lacked violence or sexual content. Both games were given an 18+ rating after extensive testing, and even with the abundance of mature content in today’s gaming environment, GTA 2 still requires the same rating. Since the visuals are unquestionably far below anything currently available, this is largely attributable to the game’s content and the inclusion of adult-oriented language.
Similar to the original Grand Theft Auto and pretty much every other GTA spinoff, GTA 2 drops you in the middle of an open-world city that you can explore at your leisure. Your heart’s desire can be mischief and chaos as you snoop around the city. Drive recklessly into pedestrians and police officers, or initiate conflicts with them.
You need to use the many recompense phones spread everywhere over the city to progress the main storyline. You might expect to hear from several pack leaders via these phones. They call you using a pay phone because you haven’t earned their confidence yet, which is necessary if you want to perform work for the posses. These “positions” will be earned through the murder of those who threaten your employers.
In spite of its intuitive controls, some players recommend playing with a gamepad. Astoundingly fast for a round of this type, however it is mostly to make up for the arcade game aesthetic. When you make a play, whether it’s a hit or a pass, the score will appear on the field instantly.
Given the shift in the industry towards the open world model that GTA practically created all those years ago, Grand Theft Auto 2 holds up surprisingly well and is a lot of fun when compared to other games of its era. If you can look past the game’s graphics, which are par for the course for 1999, you’ll have no trouble enjoying it. Though a more compact guide would have been welcome, you can get by without one.
