Pharaoh is an isometric city-building game published by Sierra Studios on October 31, 1999. It was developed by Impressions Games. To my knowledge, Sierra Entertainment’s Caesar III is the only other City Building game to use the same game engine and standards, but instead focus on a different human advancement in the distant past.

In Ancient Egypt, players construct and oversee the functioning of cities and communities, seeing to it that its residents are fed, clothed, housed, and safeguarded against dangers like epidemics and wars. The Cleopatra: Queen of the Nile expansion was released in the year 2000 by BreakAway Games. The game and its expansion pack, Pharaoh Gold, were released together in 2001. In August of 2020, Triskell Interactive and Dotemu announced that a new game titled Pharaoh: A New Era would be released in 2021.

Gameplay:

Pharaoh’s survey point can be rotated by 90 degrees in either direction (whether clockwise or counterclockwise), but the amplification remains the same. Similar to Caesar III, the console and mouse are used for most of the game’s controls.

Overlays in the game and a team of consultants (called Overseers) who report on the city’s progress and any issues it’s had are just two of the many options for building structures like hotels and streets. Other capabilities include receiving and interpreting messages, correcting errors, and resolving painful situations.

Everything from lodging to worship to warfare to commerce is meticulously modeled after the actual infrastructure of Ancient Egyptian urban centers of the time. Many of the game’s historical figures are given Pharaoh names, and the game’s help menu and manual provide scant details on ancient Egyptian rituals.

Deben is the game’s currency, but there is no evidence that standardized metal money was ever used in Ancient Egypt.
