Oscars: Riz Ahmed first Muslim to pack Best Actor designation

The English actor, comedian, and performer Riz Ahmed has been nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Metal in the film Sound of Metal.

Ahmed, who was born in Pakistan, plays a deaf stone drummer.

When you hear your own name, you have this odd reaction. The 38-year-old man explained that after completing his assignment, he simply expressed his gratitude in silence.

In 2017, Ahmed won an Emmy for his performance in The Night Of as a lead actor in a limited series or film.

At the same time, Mahershala Ali made history by becoming the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar for his performance in Moonlight.

He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his work on Green Book in 2019.

Five years after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, this year’s acting nominees represent the most diverse pool of talent ever.
