“Soccer, but with rocket-controlled cars,” has been used to describe Rocket League, in which teams of up to 8 people use rocket-powered vehicles to score points by scoring goals against each other. It’s possible to play this game in single-player, multiplayer, and cross-stage modes across all of its adaptations. New game modes, such as ice hockey and ball-based ones, were later added to the game with subsequent updates.

Rocket League takes its cues from the PlayStation 3 game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. Mixed reviews and a lack of success for Fight Cars, despite an enthusiastic following. With a view to creating a recurring revenue stream, Psyonix continued to work on agreement advancement projects for other companies.

Psyonix’s formal advancement of Rocket League by Psyonix in 2013 strengthened the relationship between Battle-Cars and Psyonix to address analysis and fan comments. While there was a lack of promotion for Battle-Cars, Psyonix worked to fill the gap by providing the game to PlayStation Plus subscribers for free upon delivery.

In spite of the focus on Rocket League’s physical science motor, the game’s designs and overall debut were praised for their improvements in interactivity over Battle-Cars. More than 10 million contracts and 40 million players were signed by the start of 2018. Rocket League has become an esport thanks to participation by professional players in leagues such as the ESL, MLG, and Psyonix’s own Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS).
