This free Ubisoft game centers on the classic Roller Derby while also incorporating a few additional norms, making it one of the studio’s biggest wagers for the upcoming year. A rare press event was held for us to try it out just before E3, and I have mixed feelings about it. It both compelled me to play until I won and gave me the freedom to stop caring about the main characters during long lulls in the action.

The game consists of three-on-three duels between groups of three characters, each of whom is represented by a different symbol and has their own distinct visual traits (no abilities right now, yet I envision something will be actualized during the improvement interaction). A robot spectator mode is in the works and can already be used to broadcast games.

He was reminded of the game Rocket League, in which the player rides around on wheels looking for a ball (in this case, skates). It’s also the last point of connection between the two things. The player can dribble the ball, avoid defenders, pass it, and take a shot on goal (it is important to point before the shot). In defense, you can knock out the attacker and run away. To maximize your chances of winning, you can run on either side of the oval track.

Roller Champions may be a multiplayer game, but its creators insist it’s a worthwhile experience because of how much cooperation it requires. Even the most basic of ball-handling drills requires both players to be aware of their surroundings before getting started. In most cases, you can give the ball to a teammate who has asked for it.

Avoid the feeling of squeezing, like you’re trying to press a panicked doorbell button. Possession of the ball must be requested after at least two seconds of a given action. From the time the ball is announced until it is seen by a player who has possession of it, you have ample opportunity to retreat and lose your prominent position on the field.

Due to the significance of verbal communication, it is strongly advised that all Roller Champions players wear earplugs at all times during games.
