However, the video game is not a direct sequel to the 1983 film directed by Brian De Palma, but rather a continuation, in which Tony Montana (initially played by Al Pacino) survives and begins reestablishing his drug empire in Miami.
Because Al Pacino’s voice has changed so much since 1983, he and the game’s creators decided that Montana would not be voiced by Pacino in this iteration. The final choice for Montana’s voice actor was made by Pacino himself. They provided voice work for the game by actors from the original film, such as Robert Loggia and Al Israel.
Critics praised the game, comparing it favorably to both Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which were both released in 2002. (released in 2004).
