Garrett, a capable criminal, is at the centre of the game’s plot. He is recruited by a wealthy official who wishes to remain anonymous in order to locate an ancient artefact.

The story is broken up into discrete quests. The mission’s difficulty and the player’s goals—such as collecting a certain amount of loot or avoiding any losses—can be adjusted beforehand by choosing a difficulty level. Garrett could use the loot from the previous quest to purchase supplementary gear from a merchant.
The Dark Engine puts the emphasis on sound, making it an integral part of Thief: The Dark Project. Depending on the terrain and how fast he’s moving, non-player characters may still be afraid of Garrett even if he’s hiding in the shadows. Dropping things on metal or concrete can attract unwanted attention, and open combat can attract hostile forces.
